WE THINK: The game is an important one for Counties
Manukau given the Ranfurly Shield is not at stake and the need to play
well away from home is part of being prepared to maintain momentum
heading into next week's final Shield challenge with the play-offs
places beyond. Their greater success this year will put even more
pressure on a disappointing Bay of Plenty side which has struggled to
make an impact all season. It is hard to see that changing given the
vitality with which Counties Manukau are playing. We pick the Steelers by 1 click here to live
Luckily an off night by Waikato goal-kicker, Trent Renata, who is
usually so reliable but could only nail 3/6, kept Wellington in front
for the duration of the contest, despite a first half try to
powerhouse Ben Tameifuna.
The upshot is that Waikato remain eight points behind fourth placed
Counties and now face a must-win match against Tasman in Nelson on
Wednesday.
Wellington, meanwhile, can confirm top billing when they take on Auckland at Eden Park on Saturday week.
44min: Waikato 11 Wellington 14 - Great start to the
half for Waikato! Their big ball-runners get into the red zone and
finally Renata lands an easy penalty. Maybe Stephen Donald, who is an
attendance, had a word at the half-time break?
